Qualified vs Talent

What EXACTLY does Qualified mean when it comes to the creative industries? Well, as with any other industry, it means there is a certificate or diploma of some sort. It takes a lot of hard work to achieve that. However, does that mean that self taught artists aren't as good? In my opinion, absolutely NOT!!

Creativity is felt in the heart. The soul. It comes from a place of passion, desire and love. I personally feel that someone who is self taught has that EXTRA bit of dedication. Because it takes a LOT of time and energy (and money!) to master your passion. I admire people who take the time to attend a school or college or uni to get their qualification. But for some, that either isn't an option, not necessary. Sure, 'trained' and 'self taught' photographers will have different style (potentially!) but that doesn't mean any one is better than the other. In my opinion that is.

A while ago I heard through a friend, that someone didn't want to book me because I wasn't 'Qualified'. I didn't have the paper on the wall saying I could do it. But to me this made no sense... because I had much more than that piece of paper. I had countless reviews and praise from my clients. I had people telling me how beautiful my work was. And to me... that was way more precious than any piece of paper.

Don't get me wrong... I am NOT saying that those who have the qualification aren't amazing! But to me, that paper doesn't automatically make you a great photographer. Just as teaching yourself doesn't! It is all about personal preference, your eye and your style. There is definitely styles that appeal to some, and won't to others. That doesn't make them bad, or not qualified to take your precious memories. It just means that there is a photographer out there that IS your style!

I know for myself, I have come a LONG way in my abilities as I have learned more about my passion. My style has changed and adapted based on my knowledge. Every step of the way, I have had clients that my style resonates with. I don't book clients that like a different style. Because really, why would I!?

That brings me to my next point! Choosing a photographer that suits you is SOOOO important! To see the 5 things to look for when choosing your photographer, click here!
