I often have people enquire about 'Lifestyle Photography' and ask me what exactly is it? I think, as photographers, we often forget not every body understands our lingo... much like a mechanic or a doctor. So, I thought what better way to explain than in a blog!
According to wikipedia, Lifestyle Photography is "a style of portrait/people photography which aims to capture and document real-life events, situations, or milestones in an artistic manner and the art of the everyday”
Often done in a clients own home, it creates a feel of calm and familiarity. Not everyone likes posed studio portraits. Just like not everyone likes photos on the beach or in a big open field. Lifestyle photography gives that connected feeling and delivers clients a truly personalised experience.
Lifestyle Photography isn't staged and posed like other styles. It is about capturing all the moments as they happen. The funny faces, silly giggles and crazy fun! It's about hanging out in the toddlers room while they read some books or play with their favourite toy. It's about running after the 5 year old as they play hide and seek in the house. Its about the exasperated looks mum and dad give each other when the kiddo just doesn't want to play. It's the REAL. It's the RAW of life.
For me personally, the majority of lifestyle sessions I have done have been with newborns. It is a beautiful way to really celebrate and experience those first few weeks of life, without the pressure of a studio. It's all about capturing those snuggles on the couch. Documenting the start of the breastfeeding journey, or the bottle feeding with those extra special looks that accompany it. It's about focusing on your family, the way you would normally 'exist'. Creating harmony within the interactions, and being present in that moment in time. Its about a sibling laying on the bed snuggling their new baby sister / brother. It's about the hand holding, the little kisses and the knowing looks.
If posing or studio's is not your thing, lifestyle may truly be the answer you've been looking for. It does not have to focus on a newborn. It can be about an older child, a pet or a couple. It can be about a pregnancy & getting ready for the new arrival. It can be a bit of fun play fighting in the kitchen. Whatever fits who YOU are as a person / couple / family. It is about capturing you being exactly YOU!
